First, do home budgeting

If you've not done home budgeting before, you might wonder 'Where did all the money go?' at the end of the month. Well this article is for you. It does not involve paying through your nose to hire a budget analyst. It doesn't even mean that you should be working in a bank or know much more than 4th grade mathematics. Home-budgeting is a simple, doable idea, that if put into effect, will surely ensure that your hard-earned income is not only well-spent, but well-saved.

So, ready? Set a time and date aside, for home budgeting and get your family together, to key in their planned individual expenditure, for the upcoming year. Once this is done, you may compare it with your expected income. This can be a massive or small reality check, depending on your spending habits, but it's always good to start out with an idea of how much you can spend. Also, it gives a realistic picture of optional expenditure - a vacation or a new gadget or furniture.

  1. Sort

The first step to effective home budgeting is sorting your expenditure. Check the list your family's made and find out where the biggest bulk of money is going. This way, you'll be in a better position to evaluate your need for said expenditure.

  2. Keep a tab

It's easier to not throw away large sums of money on fancy electronic items or furniture. But the real catch is in keeping tab of the small stuff. Calculating the casual mid-afternoon cappuccinos, can go a long way in cutting down the large amounts in the annual 'miscellaneous' list. If you can't remember the details, carry a notebook with you and jot down every little thing you spend on, for a week. This will give you a clear enough picture about where the money is actually going and make your home-budgeting efforts, every bit worthwhile.

  3. Set aside

Make room for emergency expenses whilst calculating your planned expenditure. Emergency medical expenses or even such things as fixing the car after the shock absorbers give away, are bound to crop up. Make sure such things don't catch you off guard and that you've already set aside enough to handle the problem.

  4. Save

Apart from chalking out your planned expenditure, get each member of the family to commit to a certain amount that they will save every month - even if it is from their pocket money. Not only is saving a good habit to instil and inculcate, but you'd be surprised at just how much joy it brings when you discover at the end of the month, that you are not broke and in debt, but have enough for a bonus vacation or remodelling the kitchen.

If done right, home budgeting can be the solution to more than half the stress that families endure. With a clear understanding of exactly how much you have and how much you can afford, you may begin reaping the fruits of living within your means!
