There is no doubt that the greatest leap to fame in the Will Smith biography was in the late 1980s, when he reached fame in the US as a rapper that went by the name 'The Fresh Prince'. The Fresh Prince, however, may be better known these days as his character in the TV show 'The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air'. The show ran for almost six years, from 1990 onward, initially starting on NBC before soon transferring to numerous other networks.
In the mid 1990s, Smith transferred from television to film and proceeded to star in many blockbuster films, all of which received box office success.

Smith was brought up by his two parents, Willard and Caroline, in Philadelphia. Smith publicly praises his father's dedication when it came to the livelihood and future of his children. He said: "I look at my father and how he was able to keep four kids fed and clothes and still managed to find time to spend with us".

Smith has most recently been involved controversially with the religion of Scientology, a religion which increasing numbers of actors seem to be turning to. Claiming that 98% of Scientology principles are comparable to that of the Bible, he has publicly stated that he thinks a lot of the ideas in Scientology are "brilliant, revolutionary and non-religious".
Smith denies being a Scientologist, and joining the Church of Scientology, saying "I am a Christian. I am a student of all religions, and I respect all people and all paths."
